TECHNOLOGY DAY 2-27-12

Mrs. Crain and Mrs. Spolter have had the opportunity to learn more about using technology in our classrooms, specifically using the SmartBoard and I-pads.  We have decided to have the children use these forms of technology, rather than visiting the Computer Lab on a weekly basis.

I-PADS
This week on the I-pads, we played a numeral recognition game where children were producing 2-digit numbers.  The children were also given the opportunity to have some free time, when most children chose to to Tangram activities.

SMART BOARD
Children did an activity to practice spelling our passwords.  They then played a guessing game with pictures they would draw on KidPix.

DISCOVERY DAY 2-23-12

Our Discovery activities today involved floating and sinking.
First, we predicted whether or not an orange would float.  After the predictions, we discovered that an orange does float.
Next, we peeled the orange and then once again made predictions as to whether or not the peeled orange would float.  Once in the water, the peeled orange sunk!
REASON: The rind of an orange is full of tiny air pockets which help to give the orange a lower density than water.  Removing the rind also gets rid of the air pockets, increasing the density of the orange and causing it to sink.

Our other floating experiment involved an egg and water.  First, we predicted whether or not the egg would float or sink in water.  In pure water, the egg sunk.
We removed the egg from the water and added salt to the water.  Once again, we predicted if the egg would float or sink in the salt water.
The egg floated in the salt water!
REASON:  Salt water is denser than pure water.  The denser the liquid, the easier it is for an object to float in it.

Discovery Day!

Who knew you could expand soap?!
Well we had a lot fun watching our soap expand!
Make sure to ask me why the soap expands when you add
heat!
(there is air and water droplets in the soap... when it
gets hot, it expands or pops, just like popcorn)

COOKING CLASS 2-10-12

In today's cooking class, we made matzoh ball soup.  The children helped make the matzoh mixture using matzoh, eggs, and oil.  While the matzoh mixture was chilling in the refrigerator, we read the story, Duck Soup and each of us shared our favorite soup to eat.  Once the matzoh mixture was chilled, the each child rolled some matzoh mixture into a ball.  During Rest, our soup cooked and was ready to eat when Rest was over.

ART CLASS 2-9-12

To begin today's Art class, Mr. Cicetti read the story, The Snowy Day, by Ezra Jack Keats.  He then demonstrated 2 different activities to create a snowman--painting or print-making.
Some children chose to paint a snowman.

Many children chose to do a snowman using a print-making technique...
To begin, a child uses a pencil to etch a snowman print into a piece of styrofoam.
Next, the child rolls paint on to the styrofoam.
A piece of white paper is then placed over the painted styrofoam.
The child then applies pressure to the white paper to imprint the drawing from the styrofoam on to the paper.
Peel the paper away from the styrofoam and.....
 VOILA!
