DISCOVERY DAY!

SOLIDS~LIQUIDS~GASES
Yesterday, we read a story about matter and the different states of matter--solids, liquids, and gases.  We looked at some examples of items (syrup, water, cooking oil, a plastic teddy bear, jell-o) to determine which items were a solid and which were a liquid.  We discussed how objects can change from a liquid (water) to a solid (ice) and from a solid (ice) to a liquid (water).
Next, we did an experiment by mixing corn starch and water (we called it goop).  It was difficult to determine if this mixture was a solid or a liquid.  You could roll the mixture into a ball but as soon as you let go, the mixture turned runny again.  The children enjoyed watching this change and then experiencing it for themselves.

We will continue to discuss solids, liquids, and gases throughout the rest of the school year, particularly in the cooking experiences and science experiments we do.
